How to Cancel Planet Fitness the Right Way
Planet Fitness requires cancellation by one of two methods:
Method 1: In-Person at Your Home Club
Go to the Planet Fitness location where you're a member (your "home club"). Ask to cancel and get a signed, dated cancellation receipt. Take a photo of it with your phone.
Method 2: Certified Mail to Your Home Club
If you can't or don't want to go in person:
- Write a cancellation letter stating: your name, member ID, home club, and that you're canceling effective [date]
- Send it by USPS Certified Mail, Return Receipt Requested to your home club's address
- Also send a copy to corporate: Planet Fitness, 26 Fox Run Road, Newington, NH 03801
Important: Planet Fitness does NOT accept cancellation by email or phone.
State Gym Law Protections
If You're Within 3 Business Days of Signing:
All states allow a 3-business-day cancellation window (Federal Trade Commission "cooling off" rule). You're entitled to a full refund.
Hardship Cancellations:
Most states require Planet Fitness to cancel without penalty if:
- You move more than 25 miles from any PF location
- You have a disability or medical condition preventing gym use (doctor's note required)
- You're deployed on active military duty
State-Specific Laws:
- California: Health & Safety Code § 1812.80–1812.97 — strong consumer protections for health club contracts
- New York: General Business Law § 624-d — protects against automatic renewals and refund denials
- Florida: Health Studio Act § 501.143 — health clubs must allow cancellations for medical and relocation reasons
- Illinois: Physical Fitness Services Act — specific cancellation rights
Regulation E: Your Bank Dispute Rights
Planet Fitness typically charges via Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) from your bank account. Under Regulation E (12 CFR Part 205):
- You can dispute unauthorized EFT charges within 60 days of the statement date
- Your bank must investigate and provisionally credit you within 10 business days
- If Planet Fitness can't prove the charge was authorized, the bank keeps the credit permanent
How to file: Call your bank, say "I want to dispute an unauthorized EFT charge," and provide the dates and amounts. Submit your cancellation documentation as support.
Filing a State AG Complaint
Every state Attorney General has a consumer protection division that handles gym complaints. They:
- Contact Planet Fitness on your behalf
- Investigate patterns of complaints
- Can levy fines and order refunds
How to file: Google "[your state] Attorney General consumer complaint" — most have online forms.
What to include: Date of dispute, amounts, what you've done to resolve it, what PF said or didn't say.
Small Claims Court
If the demand letter and bank dispute don't work, file in small claims court:
Filing: File in your local small claims court (typically the county where you live or where the gym is located).
What to bring:
- Membership agreement
- Bank statements showing all unauthorized charges
- Your demand letter + certified mail receipt
- Any cancellation documentation
- Written response from Planet Fitness (or proof of no response)
Claim amount: Sum of all unauthorized charges + filing fee.
Most small claims limits: $3,000–$20,000 depending on state — more than enough for most PF disputes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Planet Fitness says I have to cancel in person. Is that right? A: Certified mail to your home club is a legally valid cancellation method that doesn't require in-person attendance. Send to your home club address by certified mail.
Q: Can I just cancel my debit card to stop charges? A: This works to stop charges but Planet Fitness may send the balance to collections. Better approach: send cancellation letter first, then dispute any charges through your bank.
Q: Planet Fitness hit me with the annual fee right after I canceled. Can I get it back? A: Yes — if the annual fee was billed after your effective cancellation date, it's an unauthorized charge. Include it in your demand and bank dispute.
Q: I signed up online and never used the gym. Can I get a refund? A: Depends on timing. If within 3 business days: yes, full refund. After that, depends on your state's gym law. Check if you qualify for any hardship cancellation.
Q: My membership was for a friend and I want to cancel. Do I have any rights? A: The rights belong to the member named on the account. The member must be the one to cancel.
