The Two Legal Ways to Cancel Planet Fitness
Planet Fitness is notorious for making cancellation as inconvenient as possible. Unlike most modern subscription services, they deliberately block phone and online cancellations — a policy that has generated thousands of Better Business Bureau complaints and multiple state attorney general investigations. Despite what their front desk staff may tell you, there are exactly two officially accepted cancellation methods:
Method 1: In-Person at Your Home Club. You must visit the specific Planet Fitness location where you signed up — your "home club." You cannot cancel at a different location. Bring a photo ID and ask to fill out a cancellation form. The key issue: get a signed, dated copy of that form for your records. Never walk out without written confirmation.
Method 2: Certified Mail to Your Home Club. This is the method we recommend. Send a cancellation letter via USPS Certified Mail with Return Receipt to your home club's address. The certified mail receipt becomes your legal proof that cancellation was requested on a specific date — essential if they claim they "never received it" and keep billing you.
The $39 Annual Fee Trap (Critical Timing)
Here is the most expensive mistake Planet Fitness members make: cancelling after the annual fee has already been billed. Planet Fitness charges an Annual Fee of $39 per year, typically in August or September (the exact month depends on your home club's billing cycle). This fee is completely non-refundable once it posts to your account.
If you cancel after the annual fee is charged, you will not get that $39 back — even if you cancel the very next day. This is buried in their membership agreement but is fully legal and enforceable in most states.
The solution is simple: cancel before your annual fee billing date. Here's how to find it:
- Check your bank statements from last year — the $39 charge will appear as "PLANET FITNESS" or "ABC FINANCIAL."
- Log into your Planet Fitness account at planetfitness.com and check billing history.
- Call your home club just to ask: "When does my annual fee get charged this year?" They are required to tell you.
Once you know the date, submit your cancellation at least 30 days before it. Even if your membership continues for those 30 days, you'll save $39 versus waiting until after the fee hits.
How to Write Your Planet Fitness Cancellation Letter
Your certified mail cancellation letter needs to contain specific information to be legally effective. A vague note saying "please cancel my membership" is not sufficient — you need clear identification details and an explicit cancellation request. Here's exactly what to include:
- Your full legal name as it appears on your membership
- Your current mailing address
- Your Planet Fitness membership ID number (found on your keytag or in your account)
- Your date of birth (Planet Fitness uses this for identity verification)
- The name and address of your home club
- A clear statement: "I am requesting cancellation of my Planet Fitness membership, effective immediately upon receipt of this letter."
- A request for written confirmation that cancellation has been processed
- Your signature and the date
After writing the letter, take it to your local post office and send it via USPS Certified Mail. Request a Return Receipt (the green card) — this proves they received it. Keep the tracking number, the receipt from the post office, and the green card when it comes back. This is your legal protection against unauthorized future charges.
Planet Fitness Uses ABC Financial — What You Need to Know
Planet Fitness does not process its own billing. The company uses a third-party billing service called ABC Financial Services (now rebranded as ABC Fitness Solutions) to manage membership dues and annual fees. This is important for several reasons:
First, if you have a billing dispute after cancellation, you may need to contact ABC Financial directly, not just Planet Fitness. Their customer service number is 1-888-827-9262. However, always start your dispute with your bank or credit card company using your certified mail receipt as evidence — chargebacks are faster and more effective.
Second, the existence of a third-party billing processor explains why some members continue getting charged even after Planet Fitness confirms their cancellation: the cancellation request has to flow from the club to ABC Financial, and sometimes it doesn't. Always monitor your bank statements for at least two months after cancelling.
Third, the ABCFinancial/Planet Fitness relationship is responsible for many of the thousands of BBB complaints about continued billing. This pattern is well-documented — always get written proof of cancellation before relying on verbal confirmation from club staff.
State Law Overrides: CA, NY, TX, FL Members Read This
Here is something Planet Fitness doesn't advertise: in several states, consumer protection laws override the gym's in-person cancellation requirement entirely. If you live in one of these states, you have the legal right to cancel via written notice alone — you do not need to physically visit your club:
California: Under Cal. Civ. Code § 1812.85, a formal written notice (certified mail) is legally binding. Planet Fitness cannot require in-person cancellation if you have documented written proof. The gym must also provide online cancellation if you signed up online.
New York: New York's Arts & Cultural Affairs Law § 36.01 governs health club contracts. Written notice of cancellation by certified or registered mail is legally sufficient and Planet Fitness must honor it.
Texas: The Texas Health Spa Act (Bus. & Com. Code § 702) protects Texas consumers. A written cancellation notice is valid, and gyms cannot require you to appear in person if you have documentation of your written notice.
Florida: Florida's Health Studio Act (§ 501.012) gives members the right to cancel by written notice. Florida also gives members a 3-day rescission right on new memberships.
Even if your state is not listed above, many states have similar health club service laws. When in doubt, send certified mail — this is always legally stronger than showing up in person, regardless of state.
What To Do If Planet Fitness Ignores Your Cancellation
Thousands of Planet Fitness members have experienced the nightmare scenario: they cancelled, they have proof, and charges kept coming anyway. If this happens to you, here is your action plan in order of effectiveness:
Step 1: Dispute the charge with your bank. Call your bank or credit card company and initiate a chargeback for each unauthorized charge. Present your certified mail tracking number, your cancellation letter, and the Return Receipt as evidence. Most banks will credit you immediately pending investigation. This is your fastest path to a refund.
Step 2: Contact ABC Financial Services. Call 1-888-827-9262 and inform them that you have documented proof of cancellation and that all further charges are unauthorized. Reference your certified mail tracking number.
Step 3: File a complaint with your state Attorney General. Go to your state AG's website and file a consumer protection complaint against Planet Fitness. Include copies of your cancellation letter, certified mail receipt, and bank statements showing unauthorized charges. AGs have taken action against Planet Fitness specifically in multiple states.
Step 4: File a BBB complaint. Planet Fitness has thousands of open BBB complaints. Filing one creates a public record and often prompts a faster resolution from their corporate team.
Step 5: Small claims court. If you've been charged more than $200 in unauthorized fees and other methods haven't worked, consider small claims court. Your certified mail documentation makes this an easy case. Filing fees are typically $30–75, and you can claim the filing fee as part of your damages.
Annual Membership Holders: Special Considerations
Although Planet Fitness markets itself primarily as month-to-month, some members — particularly those who joined during promotional periods or who upgraded to special tiers — may have signed annual commitment agreements. Here is what annual members need to know about cancellation:
If you are within an annual commitment period, early cancellation may result in a buyout fee. Review your original membership agreement carefully. The fee is typically the remaining monthly dues for your contract term, but Planet Fitness policies vary by location and time period of sign-up.
However, certain exceptions allow fee-free cancellation even for annual members: relocation of more than 25 miles from any Planet Fitness location, physician-certified disability or serious illness, or death of the primary member. These require documentation but waive any early termination fees.
If your annual membership has elapsed and you are now month-to-month (which happens automatically in most cases), you have no early termination fee and can cancel at any time using the certified mail method described above.
Black Card vs. Classic Membership Cancellation
Planet Fitness offers two primary membership tiers: Classic ($10/month) and Black Card ($25/month). The cancellation process is identical for both — in-person or certified mail to your home club. The tier you're on does not change your cancellation rights or obligations.
Black Card members should be aware of one additional consideration: if you added a Black Card guest privilege that your account also bills for, that will be cancelled along with the primary membership. You do not need to separately cancel the guest feature.
Both Classic and Black Card memberships are billed monthly through ABC Financial Services, and both are subject to the same $39 annual fee each year. There is no pro-rated refund on either membership tier when you cancel mid-billing-cycle — your membership continues until the end of the current paid period.
