The Universal Rule: Always Use Certified Mail
Regardless of which gym you belong to, certified mail with return receipt is the single most effective cancellation method. It creates undeniable legal proof of delivery — the gym cannot claim they "never received" your cancellation.
Phone cancellations are routinely denied. Email cancellations are "not received." An in-person cancellation form can be "lost." Certified mail cannot.
Your Rights Under State Health Club Laws
Every U.S. state has a health club or health spa statute that regulates gym membership contracts. These laws give you rights that override whatever your gym's contract says:
- Right to cancel in writing: All 50 states — no gym can legally require in-person only
- Cooling-off period: 3–5 business days to cancel any new gym contract
- Medical exception: Cancel anytime with physician documentation
- Relocation exception: Cancel if you move more than 25 miles from any location
- Club closure: Cancel if your home club permanently closes

What to Do If Your Gym Keeps Charging You
- Send a formal demand letter via certified mail citing your state's health club statute
- Give the gym 14 days to respond and issue a refund
- If no response, dispute the charges with your bank as unauthorized
- File in small claims court if the amount exceeds a chargeback ($500–$5,000)
